Emily Lovejoy
Pop culture, baked goods, a graffiti lifestyle, fashion, furry animals, sex, and hip-hop inspire the subject matter I paint. Although stylistically lowbrow artists such as Mark Ryden, Tara McPherson, and Ron English have greatly stimulated my work. Essentially I paint what I want when I want. The images I use come from various sources such as blogs centering on fashion or pop culture, stickers, and album covers. Mostly I choose images on an impulse that I enjoy looking at and feel compelled to paint. My interest is in style especially urban street wear what inspires designers and stylists as well as today’s fashion. I have two fashion blogs one titled “Stark Obsession” and the other “$tark Obsession”, an upscale hipster inspired style fashion blog and a hip-hop inspired fashion blog. My art is directly related to this and is an extension of my interest in these areas. I paint simply what I want to look at. I like the idea of moving away from conceptual art and just making art for the sake of having an aesthetically pleasing finished product.
